Single-phase AC induction motors need only one single phase to operate. They are commonly used for low power rating applications, domestic as well as industrial uses.
When thinking about the motion of Single-phase AC induction motor, slip rate is one of the key points. In order to generate current in the coil, the coil needs to traverse a magnetic field.

Therefore, there needs to be a relative velocity difference between the magnetic field and the coil.

Because of this speed difference, the motor will rotate at a slightly slower speed than the synchronous speed.
